This paper (16 pages) presents aframework for a caregiver-centred approach to care and outlines the competencies that health and social services professionals need to develop. Aligning with a person-centred model, the approach is based on a collaborative relationship between families, community organizations and the health system. The importance of recognizing caregivers as full partnersis emphasized, as is supporting them in their role, decisions and actions, taking into account their needs, preferences and well-being.
The approach was developed as part of a joint research initiative involving more than 100 caregiver stakeholders in Alberta.
