This report (28 pages, in French) draws a statistical portrait of the caregivers of persons aged 65 and up in Québec in 2012.

The report has three sections:

  • An introduction to the context, methodology and limitations of statistical data.
  • A summary of the statistical highlights.
  • Details on the statistical data for caregivers of people aged 65 and over: overall percentage, socio-demographic characteristics, specific situations (e.g. relationship to the care receiver), the personal consequences of caregiving and access to the available support.

Released in 2016 by the organization L’Appui pour les proches aidants, the report is based on data from the 2012 General Social Survey (GSS) on caregiving and care receiving. The GSS findings were compiled for L’Appui by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Note that these data are not the most recent; a newer survey on caregiving and care receiving was conducted by Statistics Canada in 2018. However, our report presents statistical data specific to the caregivers of people aged 65 and up. The 2012 statistics are also more detailed than those in the 2018 GSS. To further explore the most recent caregiver statistics, we recommend reading the report (in French) “Qui sont les personnes proches aidantes au Québec et quel type de soutien apportent-elles ? An age and gender-based analysis.
