This research report (99 pages, in French) presents the main findings of a study commissioned by the organization L’Appui pour les proches aidants. This study looks at caregiving for older adults, specifically caregiving provided by Quebeckers who are still employed and how this affects the companies they work for. It sheds light on how work/life balance issues affect both employer and employee and examines the impact of caregiving on such parameters as organizational commitment, job satisfaction, sense of accomplishment, burnout, absenteeism, presenteeism and intention to quit.
To carry out the study, the Pôle santé HEC Montréal conducted interviews with eight Quebec employers and distributed a questionnaire among their employees. Productivity losses due to employees’ home caregiving activities were also calculated. The report concludes by proposing management strategies to lessen the work/family/care conflict faced by many caregivers.
