They can be close family members (e.g., partners, parents, children), extended family members (e.g., cousins, uncles, aunts), or from outside the family circle (e.g., friends, neighbours).<\/p>\n<p>In Quebec in 2018 (2):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most caregivers (86.6%) provided care to a <strong>family member<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>13.3% provided care to a <strong>friend<\/strong> or <strong>neighbour<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bar\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon wp-image-1608 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/observatoireprocheaidance.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/icon.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div>The notion of what constitutes an <strong>emotional bond<\/strong> can vary according to social and cultural norms. For example, in First Nations cultures, solidarity, mutual aid and commitment to the collective are core values. As a result, a caregiver can be someone other than a family member, friend or neighbour, but who plays a supportive role in the community\u2014for example, a knowledge keeper, spiritual guide or young person (3).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bar\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon wp-image-1608 alignleft\" style=\"display: block; padding-right: 7px;\" src=\"https:\/\/observatoireprocheaidance.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/icon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"141\" \/><\/div>\n<div>The concept of <strong>family<\/strong> can also mean different things to different people. Many see family as something broader than blood relations or bonds formed through marriage.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>In most Indigenous communities, <strong>family and community<\/strong> are closely entwined, while the lines between family and friendship may be blurred. Close friends can be seen as something much like a cousin, uncle or aunt (4).<\/li>\n<li>Many LGBTQ+ (5) people who meet with rejection or disapproval from their family of origin will seek self-acceptance, emotional support and a better life elsewhere. They form a \u201c<strong>chosen family<\/strong>\u201d that may consist of friends, ex-partners and\/or others in the LGBTQ+ community (6).<\/li>\n<li>For immigrants or people from minority groups, the involvement in caregiving of the <strong>extended family<\/strong> (e.g., aunts, great-uncles, cousins, grandchildren) as well as <strong>close friends<\/strong> and <strong>community members<\/strong> is a cultural value, and generally the norm (7).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=&#8221;modal-trigger-single&#8221; overflow-x__hover=&#8221;visible&#8221; overflow-y__hover=&#8221;visible&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>For an incapacity that is<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Permanent or temporary<\/li>\n<li>Physical, psychological, psychosocial or other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<div class=\"oqpa--modal-content\" style=\"display: none;\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"modal-inner-title\">For an incapacity that is<\/p>\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-inner-content\"><p>Caregivers provide support to a person who has <strong>one or more incapacities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The term \u201cincapacity\u201d can be defined in many ways (13).<\/li>\n<li>In general, a person is said to have an incapacity when it is difficult for them to carry out regular daily activities due to a prevailing health condition or issue (14).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Incapacity can be of differing durations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can be <strong>temporary<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It can be <strong>chronic or ongoing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bar\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon alignnone wp-image-1608\" src=\"https:\/\/observatoireprocheaidance.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/attention.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"40\" \/><\/div>\n<div>N.B. Some caregivers provide support for people with continuous episodic incapacity (chronic, recurring episodes or crises).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Incapacity can take different forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the <em>Act to recognize and support caregivers<\/em>, incapacity can be <strong>physical, psychological, psychosocial or other<\/strong> (15).<\/li>\n<li>In Statistics Canada studies, incapacity (or disability) is measured and linked to (16) :\n<ul>\n<li>Vision<\/li>\n<li>Hearing<\/li>\n<li>Mobility (e.g., difficulty walking, using stairs, using hands, or performing other physical activities)<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility (e.g., difficulty bending to pick up something on the floor, difficulty extending arms in any direction)<\/li>\n<li>Dexterity (e.g., difficulty using fingers to pick up small objects like pencils or scissors)<\/li>\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n<li>Learning (e.g., difficulty learning, retaining information or concentrating, including due to learning disabilities like dyslexia, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorders, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive development (including Down syndrome, autism, Asperger\u2019s syndrome, mental disorders due to oxygen deprivation at birth, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Mental health (including emotional, psychological or mental health conditions)<\/li>\n<li>Memory (e.g., continuous memory problems or periods of confusion)<\/li>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=&#8221;capsule modal-trigger second-card&#8221; Nonetheless, caregivers can remain very involved, particularly to provide emotional support and stimulation, coordinate services, or help at mealtimes or with personal hygiene (19). Caregivers can also monitor the care and services provided and ensure that the needs and interests of their loved ones (children or adults) are communicated and understood, especially at the beginning of residential care (20).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bar\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon wp-image-1608 alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/observatoireprocheaidance.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/attention.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"280\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Caregiving can be performed \u201c<strong>remotely<\/strong>\u201d\u2014for example, when the care receiver lives far away (21) or in situations where contact is limited or prohibited (e.g., during a pandemic) (22). Some caregivers may receive financial support and have a \u201ccontract\u201d as part of a cash-for-care program without being professionals (e.g., the service employment paycheque program in Quebec) (24).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free, informed and revocable: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Free: the caregiver should be able to choose whether or not to provide support to the person who requires it.<\/li>\n<li>Informed: the caregiver should have access to all the information needed to make informed decisions about the type and degree of support to be provided.<\/li>\n<li>Revocable: the caregiver should be able to decide at any time to reduce or cease their involvement with the care receiver.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Note that the notion of \u201cfree, informed and revocable\u201d support does not necessarily align with caregiver realities (25).\n<ul>\n<li>Caregivers may not always be <strong>free<\/strong> to choose to take on this role; indeed, there are numerous reasons why they may feel under obligation to do so. Many factors\u2014emotional ties, gender, socioeconomic status, family or professional background, cultural or religious values or norms, as well as the availability of quality external support\u2014can call the notion of \u201cfree choice\u201d into question.<\/li>\n<li>Making an <strong>informed decision<\/strong> to become a caregiver is difficult because it can be impossible to predict how a caregiving situation will evolve. Furthermore, obtaining information on the realities and repercussions of caregiving as well as available alternatives can prove very challenging.<\/li>\n<li>The decision to <strong>stop being a caregiver<\/strong> can be tough as well. Once someone has taken on the role, reducing the amount of care provided or ceasing to provide it altogether can be very complicated indeed. Not only is it liable to profoundly disrupt the relationship between caregiver and care receiver, but it can also have a lasting impact on their lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Certain kinds of caregivers are particularly vulnerable to these anxieties. A caregiving situation can last for a short period or a long time, or anything in between. (To find out more, touch or click on the corresponding title.)<\/p>\n<p>These repercussions can <strong>intensify and\/or become more complex<\/strong> when combined with other situations\u2014for example, social, economic or gender inequalities or forms of discrimination (e.g., racism, sexism, ableism) (34) experienced by certain populations.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\n<div class=\"arrow-content\">\t\t<div class=\"oqpa--modal-content\" style=\"display: none;\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"modal-inner-title\">How many caregivers and care receivers?<\/p>\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-inner-content\"><p style=\"text-align: center;\">In general, <b>caregiving<\/b> is understood as a relationship between two individuals: <strong>a<\/strong> <b>caregiver + a care receiver<\/b><\/p>\n<p>However, it is not uncommon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">For <b>multiple<\/b> caregivers to be involved in <b>one<\/b> person\u2019s care (8).\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">The fact of having more than one person provide support can lessen the burden of care by distributing the responsibility (9). overflow-y__hover=&#8221;visible&#8221; custom_css_main_element_last_edited=&#8221;off|desktop&#8221; custom_css_main_element_tablet=&#8221;max-width:300px;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Mental or physical health<br \/>\t\t<div class=\"oqpa--modal-content\" style=\"display: none;\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"modal-inner-title\">Mental or physical health<\/p>\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-inner-content\"><p>Caregiving may affect the caregiver\u2019s mental and physical health by limiting their possibilities for self-care.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing support <strong>can be difficult and time-consuming<\/strong>, amounting to a significant burden that cuts into the amount of time the caregiver has for other activities (e.g., physical activities, leisure and relaxation, healthy eating) (35).<\/li>\n<li>Caregiving <strong>multiplies the sources of stress<\/strong> (e.g., concerns about the care receiver\u2019s health, coordinating assistance, anticipating risks, administering medication, managing crisis situations), which can cause psychological distress and lead to exhaustion, sleep problems, anxiety or isolation (36).\n<ul>\n<li>In 2012, 71% of caregivers in Quebec felt that their situation was stressful (37).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Being a caregiver can <strong>cause someone to question<\/strong> their identity, their role as carer and their relationship with the care receiver. Younger people in a caregiving role may also put off certain major life events such as having children (43).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Caregiving can reduce the amount of time available for <strong>leisure pursuits.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2012, 64% of caregivers said they engaged in fewer social or leisure activities (44).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The same can apply to the amount of time spent <strong>volunteering<\/strong> or <strong>participating in political or cultural activities<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>24.3% of caregivers reported being in this situation in 2012 (45).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=&#8221;capsule modal-trigger&#8221; overflow-y__hover=&#8221;visible&#8221; custom_css_main_element_last_edited=&#8221;off|desktop&#8221; custom_css_main_element_tablet=&#8221;max-width:300px;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Financial situation<br \/>\t\t<div class=\"oqpa--modal-content\" style=\"display: none;\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"modal-inner-title\">Financial situation<\/p>\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-inner-content\"><p>Caregiving can affect the caregiver\u2019s financial situation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It may entail <strong>additional expenses<\/strong> (e.g., medical supplies or equipment, medication, home adaptation or moving costs, transportation costs, financial contributions for certain services) (46).<\/li>\n<li>Caregiving can eat into the caregiver\u2019s savings or pension; it may also trigger income loss, and thus lead to<strong> short-, medium- or long-term<\/strong> <strong>financial decline<\/strong> due to its impact on the person\u2019s professional life (47) (e.g., reduction to hours worked, unpaid leave, early retirement, having to give up a job).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some populations are <strong>particularly vulnerable<\/strong> to the financial repercussions of caregiving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women, who are by far most likely to give up their jobs or reduce their hours (48).\n<ul>\n<li>In Canada from 2003 to 2008, caregiving led to greater financial losses among women than among men (some $220 million in lost income for women caregivers compared to $116.3 for their male counterparts). despite the fact that women are generally paid less than men (49).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>People who already experienced financial difficulty prior to the caregiving situation (50).<\/li>\n<li>People who live in rural areas (51).<\/li>\n<li>Immigrants, who may not be entitled to receive certain benefits. What\u2019s more, a major proportion of immigrants are employed in precarious jobs, while the process of settling into a new country can be challenging, financially speaking. It can present certain additional financial obligations (e.g., related to sponsoring a family member) (52).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2018, financial support was <strong>one of the most urgent needs<\/strong> identified by caregivers (53).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\t<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
